Volunteer – Operational Roles

Receptionist

As a Receptionist you will help our ‘front of house’ to run smoothly, and be a welcoming face as the first person clients see when they visit our office. You will also undertake various paper-based and computer admin tasks. We ask you to volunteer for at least half a day a week.

A good level of literacy and general IT competency is essential.

  • Ensuring our 'front-of-house' runs smoothly
  • Greeting clients and checking them in for appointments or drop-in
  • Helping clients to complete service registration forms
  • Giving simple signposting information to clients with certain issues
  • Processing paperwork
  • Creating or updating clients files on our case management system
  • Managing busy periods in reception where there may be several people waiting and multiple tasks to complete
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Be welcoming, polite and professional
  • A keen attention to detail
  • A good level of literacy and computer skills
  • Ability to prioritise tasks during busy periods
  • Ability to follow set processes
We ask you to volunteer for at least 3.5 hours per week (weekday daytime), for at least 1 year. Reception shifts are generally 9am-12:30pm or 12:30pm-4pm.
The training for role involves three simple stages:

1. Initial induction
Meet the team and have your induction to West Offices, the the Citizens Advice Service and Citizens Advice York. The training supervisor will outline the training process and share your Learning & Assessment Record (LAR) with you.

2. Core learning
This involves working through a small handful of e-learning modules, at your own pace - this generally takes no more than 12 hours.

3. Training shift
When you've completed your e-learning, we'll invite you into the office to undertake a training shift. This is where you'll be paired with a trainer or experienced Receptionist who will show you the ropes.

Administration Assistant

The successful applicant will need to possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an attention to detail and be capable of working to a high degree of accuracy. 

The role will be responsible for supporting a variety of projects whilst also assisting the Office Administrator with routine admin duties.

  • recruitment and coordinating the work of the volunteer administration workers
  • Assist and provide administrative support for staff and volunteer recruitment
  • Ensure the smooth running of the office
  • Assisting the Finance Manager with day-to-day finance duties
  • Be a highly self motivated individual, capable of motivating others
  • Have skills using IT, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and willingness to carry out further training if required
  • Be a highly self motivated individual, capable of motivating others
  • Previous administrative experience
  • Understanding of and commitment to Citizens Advice aims, principles and policies
  • Ability to maintain and monitor own standards and that of others
We ask you to volunteer for a minimum of 2 hours per week (weekday daytime), but we are happy to work around your availability.
Full training for the role will be provided.

Financial Capability Supporters

The aim of this role is to create a preventive, pro-active approach to help people make the most of their money and to have the skills and knowledge to avoid getting in to bad debt or to deal with their debts more effectively. The service will allow people to develop skills over time, in a real life setting.

A good level of written English (both handwritten and typed), general IT competency and the ability to learn financial capability criteria are essential.

  • To improve people’s financial capability and resolve current debt issues and keep them out of debt in the future
  • Give people the skills and tools to better manage their money and increase their income
  • Build capability and resilience in local residents to manage their finances
  • Giving simple signposting information to clients with certain issues
  • Provide added value to other initiatives in the city
  • Put more money into people's pockets, giving them more for food and other essential items.
  • Empowers clients and give them confidence to make better choices and feel more in control
  • Have good practical knowledge of IT systems
  • Have good numeracy, literacy and communication skills
  • Be able to research, analyse and interpret complex information
  • Able to work methodically
  • Able to prioritise tasks
  • Able to work remotely and independently
We ask you to volunteer for at least 2 hours per week, but we can work around your availability.
Full training for the role will be provided.


Volunteer – Trustee Roles

Our Trustees are all volunteers.  We seek people with experience and skills which enable the Trustee Board to determine the Bureau’s mission and long term aims, and approve the Bureau’s strategy, Business Plan and budgets.  Trustees provide staff and volunteers with support, guidance and challenges.
